X Factor: Jay James loses sing-off to Stevi Ritchie. How did that happen?

After far too many weeks of waiting, Stevi Ritchie was in the sing-off on The X Factor and it looked like he was finally going to go home.

But he didn’t.

With him in the bottom two was Jay James.

Jay sang Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know”. Stevi performed Queen’s “Somebody To Love”.

Simon Cowell had the hardest decision to make, as they were both his acts. “I really don’t like doing this but I’m going to send home Stevi,” Simon said.

Louis Walsh found the decision easy:  “I’m saving the best singer, so I’m sending home Stevi,” he said.

And then it got weird.

Mel B, who has criticised Stevi’s singing week after week, decided that he was better than Jay in the sing-off. “Jay, your vocals were great but Stevi you actual sang tonight. So I’m sending home Jay,” Mel said.

Cheryl was the last judge to vote. “This is really hard,” she said. “Jay’s the more probable artist but Stevi’s the more fun. I’d miss Stevi more so I’m sending home Jay.”

Which meant the decision was deadlocked and would depend on the public vote… And that’s how Jay lost.

The X Factor continues with the remaining seven acts on ITV, Saturday, November 22, 8.00pm.
