He's one of this year's 15 hopefuls taking on the glitter ball, and ahead of his dancing debut, Dr Ranj Singh has opened up about the toughest moment of his life - coming out as gay to his wife.
In a candid interview, the 39-year-old Strictly Come Dancing star spoke about the “heart wrenching” moment he faced confronting his wife, after realising he was unhappy five years into their marriage.
“I accepted that it wasn’t right and it had to end,” he told The Mirror.
“It was so hard and I still don’t like thinking about it. I felt like my heart had been wrenched out of my chest.”
Ranj – who got married tho his wife in his early 20s – continued: “I was completely broken. It was the lowest point in my life. I can only imagine how hard it was for my wife, though – she didn’t deserve any of that. I feel so incredibly sorry for what she had to go through.”
The This Morning medic now hopes the BBC will partner him with a same sex professional dancer when the competition starts this year.
Speaking about his upcoming stint on the BBC One show, he revealed it would be “incredibly important” for him to take part with a male partner rather than a woman.
He said: “I would love to dance with a same-sex partner. I would value a time when same-sex couples could dance on shows like Strictly. It is incredibly important. We are making progress but I think there is still time to go”
And proving he’s in it to win it, the handsome doctor revealed he’s already been asking his friend and former contestant Ruth Langsford – who appeared on last year’s show – for tips.
“[Ruth’s] been such a sweetheart, she gave me her number and said call me anytime it’s about to all go bonkers, just give me a buzz, today she gave me some tips she said: ‘When you come down this runway, make sure you have a little routine planned out!'” he smiled.
Sounds like viewers are in for a treat!
