Ellen DeGeneres named as 2014 Oscars host

Ellen DeGeneres has been named as host of the 2014 Oscars ceremony – taking on the job for a second time.

The talk show host is following on from Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane, who presented this year’s ceremony in February.

And she said she was delighted to be returning to the prestigious job for the first time since 2007.

“I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time,” Ellen said. “You know what they say – third time’s the charm.”

She later tweeted: It’s official: “I’m hosting the #Oscars! I’d like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra.’

The show’s executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron added: “We are thrilled to have Ellen host the Oscars. She’s beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are.”

Previous Oscars hosts include Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal and Wolverine star Hugh Jackman.

MacFarlane’s turn as presenter divided audiences, as he took controversial potshots at Rihanna and Chris Brown, as well as opening proceedings with a song about Oscar nominated actresses’ topless roles.

He later admitted he did not want to return for next year’s event.

The next Oscars ceremony will take place on March 2 2014.
