Will Mel Owen meet her maker at Christmas?
EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite has spoken about her looming exit as Mel Owen and hinted that the character may never return to Walford.
The 48-year-old actress, who came back to Albert Square as Mel in 2018, previously announced in July that she’d be leaving the soap.
Now, Tamzin has heavily hinted that she won’t be coming back for a third stint as Mel. Indeed, could this even mean that Mel will meet a grisly end?
“I feel Mel’s story has come full circle and I’m happy with my departure, although of of course I can’t say too much,” Tamzin told OK!.
Mel has been torn apart by the death of her son Hunter and has been blackmailing Sharon over her baby secret.
EastEnders boss Kate Oates has teased that Mel will take centre stage as Sharon’s affair with Keanu is brutally exposed at Christmas. Mel is playing with fire here, of course, taking on the Mitchells and could this mean that she will meet her maker at Christmas?
Tamzin, whose first stint on the soap was from 1998-2002, continued in her interview that it was difficult filming her final scenes. “It was bittersweet. I’ll miss my cast family so much – Letitia Dean, Lucy Benjamin, Scott Maslen, Max Bowden and Natalie Cassidy.”
But Tamzin previously said in a statement that she felt now was the right time to go. “When [former producer] John [Yorke] asked me to return to EastEnders back in 2017, I jumped at the chance to play Mel once more but it was only supposed to be for a year.
“That year quickly passed and I agreed to stay on for another, but now the time feels right to once again pursue other challenges.
“I will of course miss so many people here at EastEnders, and I will forever have good memories of my time at the show, but I am excited to experience new roles outside of Walford.”
EastEnders continues on BBC1.
