EastEnders joins forces with Samaritans for a devastating suicide storyline

The are heartbreaking scenes coming up in EastEnders...

EastEnders bosses have confirmed that there will be a huge storyline coming to Walford as teenager Bex Fowler decides to take her own life in coming episodes.

Fans of EastEnders have seen Bex struggling over recent months as she faces a huge change in her life as she prepares to start university in Oxford.

But while her friends and family are thrilled that she got perfect grades in her A-levels, meaning she was accepted at one of the countries top universities, the pressure is too much for teenage Bex.

Despite Bex acting out of sorts everyone has put her behaviour down to nerves… but next week that is all set to change when Lisa Fowler realises Bex isn’t coping.

Having suffered with her own mental health issues, Lisa spots the signs that Bex is struggling and tries to encourage her to share what she is going through with someone.

But, despite Lisa reaching out, Bex will continue to suffer in silence and things come to a head when she tries to take her own life, wrongly thinking that she has no other option.

EastEnders has worked closely with the Samaritans from the start of Bex’s storyline to ensure that it has been portrayed as sensitively as possible.

Lorna Fraser, who leads Samaritans’ media advice service commented: “Suicide is clearly a very sensitive topic and we are pleased that EastEnders contacted us on how to approach Bex’s storyline.

“Bex’s storyline highlights the potential consequences of not seeking help if you’re struggling to cope, and also the importance of starting a conversation if you think someone you know may be struggling.

“If you are worried about someone it’s alright to ask if they’re ok. For some it can be a huge relief to know that someone’s spotted they may be going through a difficult time.”

Lorna continued: “Handling compelling soap storylines responsibly offers an opportunity to reach a large audience and creates greater awareness of how they can help to prevent suicide and what support is available.

“We would encourage anyone who has been touched by Bex’s storyline to speak to someone they trust or get in touch with Samaritans, we’re here to offer support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

EastEnders executive producer Jon Sen added: “We wanted to take Bex on a journey which accurately reflected the crises facing many young people today – many of whom, like Bex, struggle under the mounting pressures placed on teenagers today.

“Having worked closely with Samaritans, our wish is that by telling this story we can encourage others in Bex’s position to realise there’s always help and there’s always hope. ”

Thankfully Bex’s attempt to take her own life is unsuccessful and viewers will see her begin to open up about how she feels and get the helps needs.

These scenes will air next week on EastEnders.

EastEnders airs Monday and Friday at 8pm and Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
