DVD review | John Carter – Taylor Kitsch bounds to glory as Edgar Rice Burroughs’ interplanetary warrior

Propelled from the world of Westerns into the realm of sci-fi, a Civil War veteran turns interplanetary warrior in John Carter, a rollicking fantasy adventure based on stories dreamed up a century ago by Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Former army captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) encounters no end of freaky-looking alien creatures after he gets mysteriously transported to the planet Mars, or ‘Barsoom’, as the locals call it. The planet’s atmosphere gives him amazing agility and strength, which proves handy when he goes to the aid of an imperilled Martian princess (Lynn Collins) – and allows the filmmakers to show off some stupendous, CGI-assisted leaping and bounding.

Making the move to live action after animation hits Finding Nemo and Wall-E, director Andrew Stanton injects the hokum with a lively sense of fun and the cast – including Brits Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West and James Purefoy – pull off their far-fetched roles with gusto.

Released on Disney 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray & DVD on Monday 2nd July.
