Couch Potato Pickings | Ghost Town – is this a film for Ghost Whisperer fans?

Ghost Town, Ricky Gervais

I have a confession to make. I love that Jennifer Love Hewitt show Ghost Whisperer.

I know it’s not cool to say so. I learned this recently when I did say so and was mocked profusely by my friends.

I didn’t care too much. I know what I like and I will never bow to peer pressure. Funnily enough, I discovered later that none of my pals had actually seen this American TV series on the “I see dead people” theme. It’s their loss. They don’t know what they’re missing.

Now, I’m not sure if loving Ghost Whisperer makes me the perfect audience for Ghost Town, which is, to all intents and purposes, an extended Ghost Whisperer episode with Ricky Gervais in the Love Hewitt role, with a few laughs thrown in. I certainly enjoyed this film and was entertained throughout, but I’m not sure I loved it.

The reason I love Ghost Whisperer is because it’s easy viewing: every episode is an hour long, the format is comfortably familiar yet the plots are never predictable, and it’s distinctively atmospheric.

Ghost Town offers the familiar communicating with the dead format of Whisperer and is entertaining for this reason. Ricky Gervais is funny enough, and so adds some refreshing amusement, (although  the laughs are nowhere near the side-splitting levels of The Office). However, at over 90 minutes long, Ghost Town is no match for the perfectly manufactured Ghost Whisperer with its attractive 60-minutes-of-escapism appeal.

It’s worth a look though, if only to fill the time until Ghost Whisperer is next on.
