Cinema new releases reviewed for Friday 1st December…
The Man who Invented Christmas
A cash-strapped Charles Dickens triumphs over writer’s block to come up with his enduring festive classic A Christmas Carol, plucking inspiration from the names, faces and quirks of folk he encounters while penning the tale. With Dan Stevens brimful of brio in the leading role, this cheering yuletide romp should give you a warm glow – unless you’re someone who spends the festive season muttering ‘Bah, humbug,’ under your breath. ****
Who doesn’t love an uplifting tale of triumph over adversity? In this adaptation of RJ Palacio’s bestselling novel, Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson play the parents of a young boy born with a facial deformity (Jacob Tremblay from the Oscar-winning Room), who has to face down the stares and the bullies when he goes to school for the first time. There won’t be a dry eye in the house when the film is over. ****
The Disaster Artist
This real-life comedy-drama chronicles the making of The Room, the 2003 cult film whose hysterical ineptitude has seen it dubbed The Citizen Kane of Bad Movies. James Franco directs and stars, and he’s roped in brother Dave and a bunch of his Hollywood chums (including Seth Rogen and Zac Efron) to appear as well. A toe-curling delight. ****
