Some actors are just really good at going all out and channeling their inner crazy.
No doubt Werner Herzog must have been so impressed with Cage’s Lieutenant that it took him back to the days of his infamous Klaus Kinski collaborations. Let’s just hope Herzog didn’t threaten to shoot this lead too.
Like Kinski, Cage is no stranger to madness, having embodied characters like Castor Troy in Face/Off, Frank Pierce in Bringing Out the Dead and Sailor Ripley in Wild at Heart (mind you, pretty much everyone in that movie is totally bonkers!).
But when I started thinking about other male actors that do crazy convincingly, the first name to come up was, of course, Johnny Depp. Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland. Need I say more?
Then there is Robert De Niro and his Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Max Cady in Cape Fear, Paul Vitti in Analyze This or, hell, even his Jack Byrnes in Meet the Parents & Meet the Fockers. What? Would you want him as your father-in-law? Exactly my point.
A couple more memorable nut-jobs:
Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight
Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho
Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance in The Shining
(I personally feel that Jack has an underlying of crazy in all his characters – with that face he’s not really got a choice)
Mel Gibson as Sgt Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon
Did I leave anyone out???
