Josh Brolin’s police sergeant assembles an elite band of fellow cops to battle Sean Penn’s vicious Mob boss.

Flashier than a gangster’s suit, this is a cops-‘n’-crooks romp through a cartoon-like version of 1940s LA history that’s very loosely based on actual events.

Ryan Gosling plays Brolin’s slick, skirt-chasing right-hand man who helpfully raises the stakes by bedding Emma Stone’s slinky moll.

None of this is subtle, but if you can stomach the violence and suspend disbelief in the movie’s lurid pulp-fiction version of real events, then it’s ridiculously enjoyable.
