An enigmatic surfer (Simon Baker) becomes a laid-back mentor to two teen boys in this coming-of-age drama
An enigmatic surfer (Simon Baker) becomes a laid-back mentor to two teen boys in this coming-of-age drama.
Set in 1970s Western Australia, the story is based on a novel by twice-Booker-nominated author Tim Winton and marks the directing debut of Baker, best known as the cocky fake-psychic hero of The Mentalist.
His grizzled hero ignites scrappy teens Samson Coulter and Ben Spence’s passion for the ocean. The movie may not quite pull off a melodramatic turn involving Baker’s injured, equally mysterious ex-skier wife (Elizabeth Debicki), but it captures the romance of surfing (‘dancing on water’) and its heady dangers really well.
This film premieres on Monday 13th May.
