Alaska: A Year in the Wild

Alaska's wildlife prepare for one of the toughest winters on Earth

Facing everything Mother Nature can throw at them, the wildlife of Alaska must use all of their survival skills to make it through one of the toughest winters on Earth.

As the temperatures drop to a staggering -60°C, the sea freezes and vast swathes of the largest US state are plunged into darkness for two long months, Alaska’s creatures prepare.

Episode one of this stunning four-part documentary series follows Arctic specialists like hare and foxes who moult their coats, turning from brown to white to camouflage themselves in deep snow, and American red squirrels in temperate rainforests, battling to hang on to their food stores.

Will they make it through to spring?
