When did Doctors start?
The first episode went out on BBC1 on 26th March 2000.
Why do people love Doctors?
Doctors may have a gentler pace than the bigger soaps but fans are enthralled by its gripping storylines.
Doctors follows the lives of the staff and patients at the fictional Mill Health Centre. The friendly and efficient staff at The Mill (and its sister Campus surgery) are always on hand to fix a sprained ankle… and have even been known to mend the odd broken heart.
Doctors has become famous for its special guests. Former Coronation Street stars Sean Wilson and Adam Rickitt have both appeared.
More recently Butterflies actors Wendy Craig and Bruce Montague popped up as a pair of dodgy pensioners! Funnyman Joe Pasquale also recently had a notable guest part, which fans loved.
Each daily dose of Doctors features a one-off story – but it’s undoubtedly the character-driven pot-boilers that keeps it viewers regularly tuning in. And for a daytime soap, Doctors has never been afraid to push boundaries and, as such, has tackled some very gritty storylines in its time.
Doctors has also won its fair share of British Soap Awards. In 2019 Sarah Moyle won the best comedy performance for her role as Valerie Pitman in the soap. While back in 2017 ex Coronation Street actress Lucy-Jo Hudson picked up the Villain of the Year prize for her part as Rhiannon Davis.
