Coronation Street star Tina O’Brien has said she was unprepared for how big a furore her character would cause by becoming pregnant as a teenager.
Tina – who played Sarah Louise Platt on the soap – said she also received letters from young fans who identified with the character’s plight, after she fell pregnant with her daughter Bethany at the age of 13.
“It was really big at the time,” she said. “At the time I didn’t realise it because I was very new to it all and naive, so I didn’t realise what a big sort of splash it made really.
“But I did get a lot of people writing in to me, even young girls saying: ‘I’m in a similar situation’.”
“At the time it was very much in the papers,” she added, “teenage pregnancies on the rise and things like that, so it gave a talking point to families at home as well.”
Tina also said the storyline was also her most memorable.
“It’s because it was the first biggy as well. For me, that really stuck in my head,” she said.
The actress became a mother in real life last year when she gave birth to daughter Scarlett, her first child with former co-star and real-life partner Ryan Thomas.
