The former Coronation Street favourite is tasked with tracking down Andrew Earlham’s killer…
ITV has released a first look picture of ex Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly playing a cop in the eagerly anticipated second series of hit thriller Liar.
Over nine million tuned into the finale of the first series, which saw the discovery of the murdered body of serial rapist Andrew Earlham (played by Ioan Gruffudd), whose victims included Laura (Joanne Froggatt).
The second series, again penned by The Missing writers Harry and Jack Williams, will begin three weeks after an arrest warrant was issued for Andrew for the sexual assault of 19 women.
Katherine Kelly, who was recently seen in the drama Cheat, plays DI Karen Renton, who must discover who killed Andrew, who was found with his throat slit.
DI Renton, alongside DS Rory Maxwell, delve into Andrew’s past and examine the crucial weeks leading up to his murder.
Talking about the second series, Ioan previously told TV Times: “I’ve sat with the writers and I don’t envy them having to work it out but they told me it is very exciting.
“Now Andrew is dead, goodness knows where they are going but they are geniuses.
“I was thrilled they thought I could play that part. I’m able now to vie for roles that I’ve always wanted to play.”
Filming has now started and the writers, Harry and Jack, who also penned recent The Missing spin-off Baptiste, said they were delighted to be back.
“It has been a joy returning to Liar and our reunion with Joanne and Ioan. Equally we are thrilled to have Katherine Kelly on board as DI Renton after her stellar performance in Cheat.”
It’s also been announced that former Downton Abbey actress Amy Nuttall has joined the cast as a new character called Winnie Peterson.
It’s not yet been revealed when the second series of Liar will be shown on ITV. The original was screened in 2017.
