Sally Whittaker believes the Coronation Street cast have ‘turned a corner’ after the tragedies which hit the show earlier this year.
The actress, who plays mother-of-two Sally Webster, said actor Bill Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, had found solace in his faith since the unexpected death of his wife Sara. She died at the couple’s home on February 7, and just five days later Kym Marsh, who plays barmaid Michelle Connor, suffered the loss of her son Archie, who passed away shortly after he was born 18 weeks prematurely.
“We’ve had a bad few weeks within the cast, but we’re a strong cast and everyone gets on really well and I think we’ve turned a corner, so hopefully it’s all going to be good from now on,” she said. “Next year we celebrate our 50th anniversary, so it’s onwards and upwards from here.”
Filming on Corrie was suspended for a day last month – for the first time in a decade – so cast members could attend a memorial service for Sara.
“Everybody is affected when something sad happens to one of the cast in their personal life, but we’re a strong cast and we have been together a long time,” Sally said.
“I’ve known Bill for many many years and we’ve all rallied around him, but he is strong and he has a strong faith so he’s doing really well, as is Kim, she’s doing really well too.”
