Coronation Street joins race debate

There’s a new foreign face heading to Coronation Street, but Street producers are sure their latest storyline will go down well with viewers.

Actress Wanda Opalinska will play Vicki, a Polish worker who lands a job at Underworld. But her arrival is met with a flurry of nasty comments from her colleagues.

Speaking to The Mirror, a source close to the series said: “There will be scenes where viewers think she is being picked on because of where she is from.”

They went on to add that while scriptwriters are mindful of viewers possibly complaining at how the character is treated, they were not afraid to tackle sensitive issues.

The worries come after thousands of complaints over the latest run of Celebrity Big Brother, during which contestant Shilpa was allegedly bullied by other residents.

However, bosses at ITV1 insist the scripts were written long before the controversy over the reality show.

In the forthcoming plotline, Kelly Crabtree and Joanne Jackson sabotage Vicki’s sewing machine.

Meanwhile, factory owners Paul and Liam Connor make tasteless jokes about the newcomer.

Wanda has already started filming her role and makes her first appearance on February 26.
