Phillip Schofield revealed why he speeds through the British Soap Awards presentation in a recent chat with What’s on TV.
This Morning star Phillip, 52, has been presenting the awards since 2006, and in that time he’s learned a thing or two about how to keep the five big UK soaps happy on the night:
“My challenge to get the show done as fast as I can so everyone can get to the bar as quickly as possible! The commercial breaks are put on afterwards, so I rattle through things quickly, with as much fun as possible – otherwise they’d get restless!”
Laughing, Phillip added: “They’re competitive about all the awards, and everybody wants to win ‘best soap’.
“Everyone says they’re embarrassed to be nominated by the ‘sexiest male and female’ awards, but I think they’re really quietly thrilled to win. Who doesn’t want to be told they’re sexy?”
But Phillip remained tight-lipped about what happens at the after party: “It’s their night and a celebration of all their hard work.
“I normally stick my head in to the party and say hello to everyone. I’m quite a good judge of when the wheels are about to come off, so as it’s about to get messy I slide away with dignity!
“Not that I’m always that professional – it’s normally when I’m out with my mates I lose my dignity!”
This year’s awards hosted London’s Hackney Empire last month saw Coronation Street’s Michelle Keegan walk away with ‘sexiest female’ for the sixth year running. While Hollyoaks’ Danny Mac walked away with this year’s ‘sexiest male.’
